YWCA
The Affordable Housing Conservancy weatherized the 94-unit YWCA in Troy, NY in the fall of 2024. YWCA of the Greater Capital Region, Inc. has been providing safe, affordable and supportive housing to single women since 1883. Today, YWCA-GCR is the area’s largest provider of supportive housing for homeless single women and homeless women with children.
The Conservancy installed a new boiler system to replace the failing, antiquated heating system, which was draining the operating budget with its constant maintenance costs. To further the efficient operation of the building, AHC performed air sealing, installed attic insulation, improved ventilation and changed the lighting in the complex to LED lighting. These measures reduce both energy consumption and utility costs while creating a safer, more comfortable building for all.
The estimated annual energy savings, based on modeled projections, were calculated at $13,800. Energy savings free up the YWCA’s funds earmarked for housing and wraparound services that further assist the residents and local community.
Weatherization Measures
Air sealing around doors & windows for a tighter building envelope
Full boiler replacement performed for the whole building
Installation of new foam board attic insulation to improve energy efficiency
Replacement of all lighting fixtures with LEDs
